Nepotism and Other Character Flaws

Extending the theme of "family matters" and opening the typically derogatory concept of nepotism up for debate, this evening promises lively discussion between audience and panelists.

Panelists include Lisa Hutton, Andrew Kaufman, Lauren Tyler Norby and Donna Stack

Dave Ghilarducci: Rattle and Hum

RATTLE AND HUM

Rattle and Hum

An installation by Dave Ghilarducci at ART Produce Gallery

March 13 - April 18
Opening Reception: Saturday March 13, 6-9pm

Rattle and Hum is an interactive, room sized installation. The viewer enters a narrow gallery to find what, at first glance, appears to be a postminimalist sculpture: Two identical steel cages, each containing an imposing rusted steel panel, are placed opposite each other. However, motion sensors, electronics and motors are embedded into the artwork, endowing it with the potential for kinetic and acoustic theatricality. When the viewer enters the installation, motion sensors gage the viewer’s position relative to both of the cages and commands motors to vibrate the rusted steel panels. These vibrations change in intensity and duration based on the movement of the viewer. Yet, as the viewer lingers in the installation, the vibrations begin to change with apparent randomness. As the viewer moves toward a cage, the intensity may wax or wane, and the opposite cage may or may not also do the same. Each time the viewer changes direction, the piece randomizes again. Ultimately, an indeterminate relationship between the viewer and the objects becomes the basis for a time- and motion-based spectacle for other viewers.

SUSHI Performance and Visual Arts Presents Family Matters
A visual arts exhibition in conjunction with a dynamic series of multidisciplinary events

San Diego, Calif. –Family Matters introduces Sushi’s audience to a group of artists who reflect on the esoteric legacies of the avant-garde through work that is formally – if paradoxically – influenced by popular entertainment.

On view from Thursday, March 4 through Saturday, April 24, the exhibition brings a range of expression similar to that of a young person coming to terms with his own family history - harsh criticism, misty-eyed sentimentality, perverse parody, and nuanced understanding all abound. SUSHI’s viewer is presented with a range of experiences stemming from the personal stakes these artists have in the often revolutionary, always transient moments that make up the history of the avant-garde.

California Center for the Arts Escondido

by Marilyn Mitchell

Cascade"Cascade" - Wendy Maruyama

The California Center for the Arts in Escondido has a high quality exhibition that most everyone will find visually interesting and well installed (with only a few exceptions). To begin, "Material Matters: Selected Works by Allied Craftsmen" has a range of works, all worth pondering. The title of the show, 'Material Matters' could be interpreted as a pronouncement that material items have importance, versus decades of conceptual dominance in art or it could be viewed simply that all items presented highlight the use and transformation of materials. Here are a few that must be seen...

Meantime, Donovan herself will be giving a talk in the gallery Saturday afternoon at 2 PM. Note that the museum warns: "Space is extremely limited due to restricted gallery capacity. There are no advance tickets for this event. Entry will be on a first-come, first-served basis."

On that basis I'm skipping the talk, partly out of unwillingness to camp on the doorstep overnight, and mostly due to putting in a full day this Saturday at the sdspace4art community build.

"Circle of Complication", kinetic sculpture and drawings by Dave Ghilarducci
February 4 - 27, 2010 | Exhibition Reception: February 5, 6 - 9PM

Sushi Performance and Visual Art presents "Circle of Complication", a kinetic sculpture and series of drawings by Dave Ghilarducci.

Dave Ghilarducci’s artwork investigates perception on an everyday level, often using popular technology as the subject and object of artistic inquiry. Circle of Complication is an electronically mechanized sculpture designed to make drawings reminiscent of those made by a child using a Spirograph toy. In Ghilarducci's work, however, the drawings are made at large scale using a program designed to produce a series of random operations. Circle of Complication simultaneously evokes the spontaneous discovery of child's play and the complex laws of math and science that govern its creation.

Dave Ghilarducci was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He currently lives and works in Escondido, California. He studied engineering and physics at University of Illinois at Chicago. After graduating, Ghilarducci worked as an engineer, developing a range of culturally substantive objects - from rockets to Palm Pilots. He left the engineering word in 2006 to work full time as an artist. Ghilarducci’s work is often interactive and engages viewers while reminding them of the various and often transparent ways technology is used to manage interactions. Although still quite early in his career, Dave Ghilarducci’s work has garnered critical validation. His work has been exhibited at Track 16 Gallery and Oceanside Museum of Art, and later this year at Art Produce Gallery.

Dan Allen - “Pareidolia”

from the press release

Dan Allen

Have you ever seen a face in the clouds? Ever play a record backwards, and hear a hidden message? This psychological phenomenon is called "Pareidolia" which is also the name of our next show. Driven to Abstraction
Exhibition featuring works by Tania Alcala (San Diego Art Prize New Contemporaries 2009) and Silvia Valentino Karbashlieva

Show Dates: November 25, 2009 to Feb 15, 2010
Reception: December 10, 2009 at 8pm - Artist talk begins at 8pm (L Street Fine Art)
After opening celebration for the artists at "The Corner Bar & Restaurant" starting at 9pm
369 10th Avenue (10th and "J")
San Diego, CA 92101

L Street Fine Art Gallery presents a joint exhibition of the works of Tania Alcala and Silvia Valentino Karabashlieva. Alcala’s abstracts are based on her experience as a commercial pilot, while Karabashlieva drives her car to create work with intense attention to details. This spotlight show for Alcala marks the end of her year as a participating artist in SD Art Prize New Contemporaries II. The SD Art Prize New Contemporaries II exhibition was held in the Spring of 09 at Noel Baza Fine Art.

TANIA ALCALA

Tania Alcala’s paintings are about finding the joy of being and freedom within herself. Her work is about experiencing consciousness and awareness with the seduction of color with her brush strokes.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Tania obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Ottawa University in Phoenix, AZ and a Master’s degree in Transformative Arts from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, CA.
The sense of the ethereal that Tania Alcala discovered in the paintings of many artists like Mark Rothko, Yves Tanguy, and Eduardo Matta inspired her to take up flying. She took to the skies as a commercial pilot to seek the freedom she craved. While aviation offers mobility and a “heavenly” view of the world, the exacting, highly regimented aspects of that profession do not compare to the creative outlet she achieves as an artist.

The Torrance Art Museum is proud to present ZOOM, a juried survey of current developments in contemporary artistic practices from California, Arizona, Nevada, and Baja artists. In its inaugural year ZOOM breaks new ground and investigates a myriad of directions and movements in contemporary art beyond the traditional institutionalized juried show. ZOOM sets a new benchmark with an un-paralleled open application for a museum survey exhibition. This exhibition seeks to reflect current trends, track developments in contemporary practices, and explore associations between the regional geographical areas. But more importantly to give voice to new artists via the open call process, for those artists without the school connections or the favored gallery, ZOOM evens the playing field.

Los Angeles is considered one of the most dynamic cities globally for the creation of contemporary art and Torrance sits in the midst of this activity. ZOOM at TAM seeks to redefine this creative hub for contemporary art to include a larger geographical context and expand our local remit to include a larger swath of artists that have a direct influence on the cultural dialogues of our time. As we compare and contrast various art practices found in this larger region of influence we will present a more comprehensive view of current artistic developments regionally and further afield.

These amazingly beautiful woodcuts and linocut prints are timely and significant works of art. Featured in museums and major collections of Latin American art, Artemio's work offers an amazing value for the collector at this time.

Artemio Rodriguez was born in Tacambaro, Michoacan Mexico in 1972. He began by studying agronomy at the Universidad Autonomo Chapingo and was later introduced to art when he apprenticed and learned letterpress printing from Juan Pasco, a master print maker working out of the Taller San Martin Pescadoer near Rodriguez’s hometown.

As a print maker who works primarily in black and white, Rodriguez’s signature style emphasizes simplicity and clarity. European medieval woodcuts and the great Mexican print artists such as Jose Guadalupe Posada have been influential in Rodriguez’s print making career. Though comfortable working in a wide variety of artistic media, Rodriguez regards his ten years as a print maker as the beginning of a long quest. His larger goal is to keep exploring and promoting printmaking until he feels he has contributed something important to the medium. He fully expects this to take a lifetime.

Rodriguez’s work has been featured in galleries and Museums in the United States and Mexico. He has also illustrated and published several books. In 2009, The San Diego Museum of Art acquired several prints by Artemio Rodriguez including his monumental ( 8 x 12 foot) “Triumph of Death". They are currently on display in the new
Mexican Gallery of the SDMA in Balboa Park.

Michael Arata

ART EXHIBITION: MICHAEL ARATA
"REMEMBER"
November 14 - January 9
Opening Reception: November 14, 7-10 pm
Artist Talk: Sunday, December 6, 2pm

"Officials today took the rare step of publicly releasing photos of women connected in some way to convicted murderer Bill Bradford, hoping the public might help identify them. While detectives believe some have been murdered, they can't say conclusively and hope publicity might bring witnesses - or the women themselves - forward."
Los Angeles Times, July 25, 2006

In his first project with Kristi Engle Gallery, artist Michael Arata uses the medium of painting as a process of photographic manipulation. This series of works entitled Remember features 54 small paintings (acrylic on panel), each a portrait of a young woman, hair carefully rendered but with faces blanked out. The hairstyles are all of a kind fashionable in the late 70s and early 80s and place the women in a distinctive place in time. That place tragically coincides with the 1984 arrest and conviction of William Bradford for the murders of two young women in the Los Angeles area.

So please come attend the Opening Night reception, rub elbows with the artists, and enjoy the art and wine and cheese, and remember that any artwork you purchase is a win/win/win: You, the patron, will now own an original artwork to grace the walls of your residence; you will be directly supporting a local artist; and at the same time, 100% of the net profits from all Art Wow sales go to support autism research.

For the new exhibition season the University Art Gallery, UC San Diego presents an international exhibition entitled Off The Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art.

The exhibition brings together artists from around the world to explore the global ramifications of gender-based violence. The exhibition, curated by Randy Jayne Rosenberg executive director of Art Works For Change, features twenty-one artists from nineteen countries. "Throughout the world, women and girls are victims of countless and senseless acts of violence. The range of gender-based violence is devastating, occurring, quite literally, from womb to tomb," explains Randy Jayne Rosenberg. "The stories that underlie these artworks return us imaginatively to the event of violation and allow it to affect us." Premised on the visionary potential in art, the exhibition avoids tabloid and sensational imagery. The invited artists were asked, "To help us create new representations through their artworks and, in doing so, help us feel and understand the essence of the problem of violence against women," says Rosenberg.

The exhibition hopes to help create a new conversation on this important topic. The exhibition explores multiple aspects of violence against women and girls organized within several thematic categories: Violence and the Individual; Violence and the Family; Violence and the Community; Violence and Culture; Violence and Politics. The organizers hope the audience leaves the exhibition with a better understanding of the roots of abuse, a feeling of empathy, and an awareness of choice in their actions and beliefs. These problems, though widespread, are often invisible, says Rosenberg. "When we encounter violence against women, we often overlook the facts and experience a sort of blindness. We choose not to see the devastation of domestic violence, calling it 'a family affair'. Honor-killings of women in faraway regions of the world become nothing more than a 'cultural difference'. We find it hard to believe that sex trafficking and exploitation occur in our cities, close to home. The rape and torture of women during armed conflict is the inevitable 'messiness of war'. As such, the political and systemic sources of violence are often underestimated or overlooked."

The University Art Gallery is partnering with 5 Women Who Care, Amnesty International, Casa Cornelia Law Center, CastLA, Center for Community Solutions - San Diego, End Violence Against Women International, Survivors of Torture, The Voices and Faces Project, United 4 Iran and Women's Resource Center as well as departments and programs on campus in order to create an extensive calendar of programming. Please visit our website at uag.ucsd.edu regularly to find out about the different events taking place.

The unreal is more powerful than the real, because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. because its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. stone crumbles. wood rots. people, well, they die. but things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on.

The PMCA proudly presents a survey of more than one hundred twenty works drawn from the oeuvre of the celebrated painter Wayne Thiebaud. With his penchant for dazzling sunlight and high-keyed color, and a gift for painterly, sensuous handling of oils and other media, Thiebaud's paintings link high art with popular culture while conveying a sunny optimism that is quintessentially Californian. Although he is best known for his vibrantly colored paintings of bakeries and delicatessens, the artist has also specialized in Northern California landscapes, San Francisco cityscapes, and colorful beach scenes. A variety of these paintings will be on display along with prominent drawings and rarely seen figurative works spanning his career.

This exhibition is organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum and curated by Dr. Steven Nash.

Support for this exhibition has been provided by the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, Bel Air Investment Advisors, LLC., Simon Chiu, Michael and Barbara Brickman, Whitney and Susan Ganz , James Goodman Gallery, Community Bank and Maginnis, Knechtel & McIntyre LLP. North Park Nights Announces — "Green Scene"

from the press release

NPN

San Diego, CA (August 17, 2009) - On Saturday September, 19th from 6pm - 10pm North Park Nights, non-profit arts collective, will celebrate their third collective event - "Green Scene." September's event will feature local artists and businesses as they respond to the "green" theme. NPN believes in sustainability, responsibility and an overarching respect for our immediate community and by extension the planet at large. The date for the event was chosen specifically to build on the efforts of local architecture firm, Zagrodnik + Thomas, who for the past few years laid the groundwork for green events in their annual "Green Scene." The collaborative spirit has made this years' event bigger and better. Artwork will be featured at local galleries, restaurants, retailers and bars. Together we're going to paint the town "green," freckling the North Park landscape with creative eco-inspired works of art.

Cardboard Challenge

In the spirit of "green", select members are responding specifically to a cardboard challenge that coincides with our second scavenger hunt. Local artists and business were invited to create a window display, artwork or installation that is built primarily from cardboard. It will be juried, and participants will compete to win prizes for first and second place. Most importantly, the public is invited to come and enjoy the creativity. Stroll through and take a peak or head out on the scavenger hunt that will lead you to each participating location and ultimately to a wide array of prizes, from gift certificates to artwork, all donated by different local businesses. Local artists will show SD how North Park can convert objects that are ordinarily thrown out into works of art. Creativity meets sustainability in this interactive project.

About North Park Nights

NPN is a non-profit collective of North Park businesses, artists and community leaders dedicated to the support and preservation of arts and culture in the North Park community. Through the organization and promotion of individual artists and collective events, NPN insures the continued revitalization of the arts in North Park and by extension all the businesses there in. The strength of a committed collective group has laid the foundation to set North Park, its artists, businesses and general spirit, apart from any other community on the map.

Julia Westerbeke - “Alien Organic” @ compactspace gallery

from the press release

“Alien Organic”
Julia Westerbeke

Sept 26th - Oct 31st
Opening Reception: Saturday September 26th, 6-9pm

Julia Westerbeke

compactspace announces “Alien Organic,” an installation of sculptures and site-specific works by Julia Westerbeke.

In her obsessively detailed works, Julia Westerbeke creates terrains that are by turns organic and curiously alien, quiet yet chock-a-block with information. These abstract sculptures covered in crops of cilia-like drawings invite associations that run the gamut from microbes and scientific diagrams to Dr. Seussian flora and fantastical illustrations. For instance, a mountainous spill of white hot-glue adorned with patches of vinyl drawings might be a glacial landscape or Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. A slick, coiling tube that sprouts leaf-like forms could inspire thoughts of tropical vines or venomous creatures. Through a certain indeterminacy, each piece feels at once familiar yet foreign. The artist is interested in these subtle contrasts, tempering the beautiful with elements of the strange or the unexpectedly alluring. In kind, her use of materials could best be described as alchemical: burnt Styrofoam, melted plastic, paper dipped in resin and tiny units of drawings clustering on the surface.

The detail in each work pays homage to the intricacies of natural forms, while the obsessive accretion of elements gives a nod to the process of germination. It could be argued that the artist likes to “grow” these works, building them slowly from the ground up. This installation is filled with sculptures that yield more after closer inspection. While exploring ordered rows of drawings you will discover a neighboring plastic sphere encasing a nest-like form and translucent arches that bend toward delicate filigrees of dripped glue. Here, there are patterns within the patterns. The sum-total creates an eco-system of the artist’s making, one that is grounded in a specific visual vocabulary that has been influenced by cultures of fantasy and science fiction.

Julia Westerbeke has just recently completed her MFA at the University of California, San Diego. This is her first solo show in Los Angeles.

Agitprop: Brain Trust

September 12, 2009 – October 11th 2009

Opening reception: Saturday, Sept. 12, 6-9 PM
Closing reception: Saturday, October 10, 6-9 PM

ART Produce Gallery

San Diego CA. 92104

Agitprop moves into a new phase of agitation and propaganda by illustrating some of the work it has done in the past and asking you to participate in future projects by becoming part of a “brain trust”. This installation addresses issues of social economics, art markets, commodities trading, and community engagement.

In “Brain Trust”, Agitprop turns corporate and art world institutional conventions on their head as a method of generating support for projects based on connectivity and community at the scale of the neighborhood. “Brain Trust” asks people to become “investors” in Agitprop. Agitprop is a space in North Park which attempts to blur the lines between individual art practice, the Studio, the Gallery and the Neighborhood.

The Agitprop “Brain Trust” is established through “Brain Blocks”, an edition of 1000 sculptures which when purchased serve as “stock” in Agitprop. “Brain Blocks” simultaneously reference the art market, think tanks, commodities trading, and the “Cube” as an art historical sculptural form. Each sculpture consists of a 4¼ inch concrete cube with a surface pattern resembling the human brain.

Sculptural “shareholders” will become facilitators of Agitprop’s upcoming projects and will be asked in the future for feedback on these same projects. Past projects include the Agitprop space itself, literature readings, Art Tap Outs I & II (live critiques in the form of underground pugilism), artwork in empty storefronts, collaborations with other neighborhood entities, etc.

The initiation of Agitprop as a space, and subsequently the “Brain Trust” project, stems from an examination of and response to current art support structures. Contemporary practice tends toward two approaches to art distribution: art works presented as commodities by commercial galleries and dealers, or conversely as visual culture by universities and museums whose funding, when traced backwards, often leads to a corporate source. This exhibition asks the question “Is it possible to have a neighborhood art practice supported wholly by those who the practice serves?”

In addition to the “Brain Blocks” component of the exhibition, several single-day events are scheduled over the duration of the exhibition, including a walking tour of residual spaces in North Park, self-portrait photography sessions, free soup, and more. A calendar of events will be available at the exhibition, as well as in postings on the Agitprop blog.

Beyond the Border Art Fair

by Richard Gleaves

If you were wondering how one goes about launching something as big as an art fair, but in San Diego in the current economy, the answer is better magic through good design.

The BTB booth design, with its strong emphasis on diagonals and irregular booth spaces, resembled nothing less than a Menger sponge, creating the illusion of an infinite exhibition hall while fitting in a room the size of a medium theatre.

Project X: Art

While definitely sympatico with the "Juxtapoz" philosophy and aesthetic, we are by no means limited to lowbrow, pop surrealism or any other genre (in fact, the market seems to be getting a bit crowded with cute, big-eyed girls lost in ominous forests with cuddly animals and pop cultural references). That being said, if you're a traditional plein air master or water color diva, we're not the place for you. Other than that, it's game on.

Raging Art Bull

The second installment of Raging Art Bull has been released and is online for your listening pleasure. Philly Joe Swendoza, co-host of Art Rocks! Radio, tackles such épineux subjects as whether or not artists should be paid for exhibiting their works in a gallery - or simply for showing up - and the abusive behavior of asking them in some cases, to "pay to play" in juried and charity events. I have opinions about both these questions but would like to hear what you have to say. Give a listen, leave a comment or drop Philly Joe a line at Art Rocks! Radio.

Phenomenon is a blending of Macellaio and Sullivan’s interests in the physical world resulting in dynamic installations in unexpected materials. Objects are reinterpreted as the artists look at, react to, and contemplate nuance in nature.

Phenomenon

Sullivan finds intrigue in microscopic cell forms or macroscopic kelp clusters, creating work that is tactile, viscous and sensuous. Further investigation reveals repetition within a hybrid landscape and the perseverance of order in nature. Macellaio finds disgust, interest, and intrigue within the world of insects. She interprets life cycle, chaotic balance, adaptation, and the significance of arthropods in every aspect of life.

Chicago, IL

Gallery Talk: Thursday, July 16 / 12:15 p.m.

Tom Torluemke is a well-known, Chicago-area artist whose professional accomplishments include highly imaginative work in a wide variety of artistic mediums. A versatile and prolific artist, Torluemke’s artworks range from major public projects to site-specific installations, to oil paintings, watercolors, and his continuing use of paper in many forms. For this exhibition, the artist pursues his gallery work by showing mainly figurative, semi-abstract paper constructions in both two and three dimensions, with socio-political content guided by personal experiences. In Torluemke’s skillful manipulation of imaginative forms, his non-objective watercolors present intensely autobiographical themes relating to life experiences, states of being, and states of mind.

Pushing the limits of his imagination at all times, Torluemke has ventured to invent new ways of conveying his artistic language in collage, culminating in three separate bodies of collage work: using contact paper, construction paper, and inlaid painted paper. Just two of his collage portraits seen here collectively contain 60 parts, while his three new wall reliefs are complete works of sculpture, individually worked out to be an interesting, interlocking combination of fabricated elements.

His work addresses a myriad of complex domestic and social situations, taking us on numerous visual journeys of exploration and invention laced with life experiences and reflections on nature, man and society. They are intricate beyond our first impression, and both playful and profound at the same time. By employing collage techniques that are reminiscent of grade school art projects, and by manipulating and recycling his own pre-drawn images within the medium, Torluemke strikes a perfect balance between accessible abstraction and innovation. One wall of facial likenesses also exposes genitalia in the abstract, using the veiled sexual imagery that he favors in his deeply personal practice.

Tom Torluemke is a Chicago native now living in northern Indiana, with a career spanning more than 25 years. He has a long list of solo exhibitions since 1982, predominantly in the Midwest. In addition, he has participated in group shows too numerous to list, which took place in many states from California to New York. Torluemke has works in museum permanent collections and private collections in Chicago, Indiana, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Germany, in addition to his public and private commissions. In 2007, Torluemke was the recipient of the Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship, in addition to receiving other awards and honors for his educational work and community contributions. Besides giving private studio classes, Torluemke has taught as an adjunct instructor at Valparaiso University, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and as a full-time instructor for 12 years at the American Academy of Art in Chicago.

The Michigan Avenue Galleries exhibitions are generously supported by Friends of the Chicago Cultural Center.
EXHIBIT RUNS THROUGH September 27.

MAY-LING MARTINEZ: MEASURED RESISTANCE
JUNE 27 - AUGUST 1, 2009

ARTIST'S RECEPTION: FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 6 - 8 PM

Luis De Jesus Seminal Projects is very pleased to announce MAY-LING MARTINEZ's debut solo exhibition, titled Measured Resistance, on view from June 27 through August 1, 2009. An artist's reception will be held on Friday, June 26, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

MAY-LING MARTINEZ's new sculpture and works on paper serve as a metaphor for an innate desire to understand and control our surroundings under difficult circumstances. The works in Measured Resistance engage in the larger domain of relations--among ideas, objects, and the human heart--in order to gain a deeper insight into existential issues, such as the need for security and balance. Intrigued by human behavior and thought process, MARTINEZ investigates the paradoxical idea of maintaining control and stability under chaos. At the same time, she explores the idea that reason and logic, as prescribed by science and engineering, can function as a solace to an unstable reality framed by the infallibility of perception and personal subjectivity.

Shirin Neshat at MCA San Diego

by Richard Gleaves

Segment from Women Without Men

On June 18, the supremely talented filmmaker and photographer Shirin Neshat appeared at MCA San Diego to present her feature-length film/work-in-progress Women without Men.

The film, based on Shahrnush Parsipur’s magic realist novel, is set in 1953 Iran during a period of national political turmoil, and uses the deaths of three Iranian women to explore a host of social issues involving personal and political freedom.

During the post-performance conversation, Neshat and film curator Neil Kendricks spoke extensively about the work's prescience given current events in Iran. What neither of them knew was that two days later, on June 20, Neda Agha-Soltan would lose her life and become an instant world symbol of the current political turmoil.

As a result, Neshat's film — which is six years in the making — has been given the semiotic equivalent of a spin dry set on "hot". It will be interesting to see how this work-in-progress resolves now that life has told its story.

Neda, rest in peace.

Slapshock Performance by Elle Mehrmand and Micha Cardenas at Compactspace Los Angeles

from the press release

SlapshockWhat: Slapshock Performance by Elle Mehrmand and Micha Cardenas at Compactspace

Where: Compactspace
105 E 6th St
Los Angeles, CA 90014

When: TONIGHT Thursday, June 11th, 8pm

Contact: Elle Mehrmand - ellemehrmand@gmail.com
Micha Cardenas - mcardenas@ucsd.edu
Compactspace - 626.676.0627

Slapshock is a performance using a Freeduino and an Arduino to create a pain sharing device. The performance, by CRCA researcher Elle Mehrmand and Calit2 researcher and Experimental Game Lab member Micha Cardenas, is an exploration of symbiotic relationality through pain, in which each performer slaps themself in turn causing the other performer to receive a painful electric shock.

The devices were created by Mehrmand and Cardenas using a Freeduino, an Aruino, piezo sensors and Transdermal Electro Nerve Stimulation (TENS) units. Mehrmand and Cardenas soldered the components together and programmed the microcontrollers to detect a slap through the piezo sensor and activate the TENS units when the slap occurs.

The performance is one of a series studies for “mixed relations”, a larger set of performances using technology to explore intersubjective relationships between people as well as between people and technology. “mixed relations” will involve two performers in mixed reality environments using their bodies as instruments to produce live audio, and will take place in the Fall of 2009.

Slapshock will be performed as part of The Dark Tower, a group show of UCSD MFA candidates and recent graduates curated by Cauleen Smith. The performance will be at the Compactspace gallery during the LA Artwalk on June 11th, 2009.

Art + Science "Eyesight is Insight" - Escondido

Art + Science

Art + Science
June 11th - July 3rd, 2009

Lectures: Sat. June 13th, 12 noon - 4pm
Featuring:
Larry Vogel , Philip Staiger- Digital Media Presentations / Joe Nalvan, Printing on Metal / Mark Bealieu- Novatel "Artist Scientist Manifesto" / Ruth West, UCLA - Genetics and New Media

"Art + Science" juried by Ruth West and Sarah Attwood features explorations into the unknown. First place went to Renee Richetts for her installation piece "He'll Go Far." Renee utilizes a blender and goldfish to challenge the question "Do different blending method affect the calcium loss in fresh food?" Second place went to artist Natalie Garduno for her wood/mixed media piece "My Periodic Table" which plays with the ideas of 'elements' and 'inspiration.' Third place went to artist Paula Poole-Stalbaum for her aquatint piece "Mars 1976/2001" Paula's piece presents the pictures taken of the 'Face' on Mars in 1976 and 2001.

Juror's Statement by Ruth West and Sarah Attwood:
"Art is a way of knowing our universe. Our quest for understanding has lead to the development of technologies to pry open atoms and look to the farthest reaches of the universe. All the while, an ultimate understanding of ourselves and the nature and origins of life eludes us. The work of the artists in this show spans this range of inquiry, from cosmology and environmental concerns, to the smallest scales inside of cells and the infinite permutations of patterns we see in nature. While posing more questions than answers, each work takes a personal approach to the notions of artistic practice as a mode of inquiry."

Check 2 Check

by KAI ONE

"My fight is ill" - Naughty by Nature

What do you do when you have no job and no money? I don’t know what you would do but I threw a party. It wasn’t just any party it was like getting flashed transported out of my shitty little miserable city through funk music and revelry. It was more than just a party though it was an art show. Actually it was two art shows in the same night. If you were too stupid to understand the concept then we didn’t want you to come. Check 2 Check. Shit was off the chain. Admission was $1 with a ticket to an art raffle that never happened because the MC got wasted. Instead art was hurled out into the crowd like nuclear warheads.

It all started as a stoned idea in the head of a local sandwich shop delivery driver. He came by our house while we were having a yard sale and saw the mass amount of art we had piled up in every corner. He had a venue that we could have a show in at a local Hardcore music spot. I rounded up a dozen or so of the most honest, free-wheeling, broke, degenerate, beautiful, talented cats doing their thing out here. We had so much art that we needed to find more than one spot to show it in. Plus we were trying to have a free show and they were trying to charge for our bands. Crack Banshee, Zackey Force Funk, and Twenty One Pump Street tore the walls down. Playing cards rained in the air. Minds were blown. This is what art is supposed to be about. Two shows one night. More art than you can shake a stick at. I lost ninety six bucks off the show. The fucking cops even came and red stickered the venue. Welcome to 2009 you still can’t stop us.

"Color Odyssey" - Dr. Frank Leo Vicino

from the press release

Dr. Frank Leo Vicino

Edgeware Gallery

“Color Odyssey”
June 6th, 2009 from 12 – 6 pm in conjunction with Art Around Adams Street Fair

Edgeware Gallery is proud to announce the debut of “Color Odyssey”, an exhibit featuring 35 collages from the artist Dr. Frank Leo Vicino. It is the gallery's first showing of an artist without autism.

Vicino’s collages range from abstracts to landscapes to portraits, with the universal component being their dazzling color. Comparing his pieces to a play, Vicino comments, “On my stage, the main actors are color, texture, and composition, with color in the lead role”. The supporting role of composition also adds an intriguing unpredictable/random element in the form of upside-down letters and word fragments which show up on many of the small magazine pieces which are laboriously pieced together to create each collage, a process Vicino calls “Mosiac Collage”.

Edgeware Gallery is the newest art gallery in the Kensington district, and has the distinction of featuring both disabled and non-disabled artists. Its resident artist is Mark Rimland, son of Gloria Rimland, and the late Dr. Bernard Rimland. Mark Rimland is an adult artist with autism, and Dr. Rimland was the founder of the adjacent Autism Research Institute, a fixture in Kensington since 1967.

Proceeds from the sale of artwork from the Edgeware Gallery fund research to develop and to validate effective treatment for people on the autism spectrum.

There are many spaces between neighborhoods in San Diego and Tijuana that resonate with stories from the personal to the universal. Do artists have a right to a prominent and engaged presence in public life?

Ask Bill Ivey, who penned the Cultural Bill of Rights during his tenure as the chair of the National Endowment for the Arts. His advocacy for a greater role for culture and creativity in our national dialogue inspired President Obama to appoint Ivey to lead his transitional team on arts and the humanities.

Ivey is joined by cultural critic Lewis Hyde for a dialogue about the social value of the arts, of the cultural commons, and how policy and theory should ensure open access to creative work.

This program is the first installment in a new occasional series, Getty Perspectives, which will bring distinctive voices to the Getty to discuss the arts and the relationship of visual culture to our broader public culture.

About the Speakers

Bill Ivey
Bill Ivey was chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts from 1998 to 2001 and director of the Country Music Foundation from 1971 to 1998. He was twice elected Chairman of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. His most recent book is Arts, Inc., which details "how greed and neglect have destroyed our cultural rights." He is also founding director of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University.

Lewis Hyde
Lewis Hyde is a poet, essayist, translator, and cultural critic with a particular interest in the public life of the imagination. He is the author of The Gift, which was recently reissued in a special 25th anniversary edition. A MacArthur Fellow and former director of undergraduate creative writing at Harvard University, Hyde is the Richard L. Thomas Professor of Creative Writing at Kenyon College.

Distinction at 5

from the press release

Distinction Gallery

Distinction is pleased to announce that we have managed to remain in business in Escondido for 5 years!!!

Distinction GalleryPlease help us celebrate this massive milestone with a very special anniversary featuring "The Journal Entries of Changing Tides": a solo show featuring new works by Andy Haynes. The opening reception with the artist and live music by The Band of Goodmen, Wiens Family Cellars wine, and Karl Strauss beer will be on Saturday June 13th from 6 - 11pm. Haynes is a personal gallery favorite and it is a true honor to hold his first solo exhibition.

For Artist Andy Haynes, creating visual art is an expressive outlet for internal emotions and energy. In essence, his art is a concentration of painting and drawing, focusing thematically around self-healing and contemporary moral issues. These issues portray both the dark as well as the beautiful sides of youth in the fast-paced society of modern America.

Gallery to Andy: Do you have a title picked out for your show?

"I am calling this body of work "The Journal Entries of Changing Tides." Since I began these pieces, I have been thinking a lot about what I would title the show....so after months of ups and downs, changes in techniques, and style, I began to develop a title. A lot of this work deals with the ocean. I think I just need to get back to it. So I have referenced it's theme throughout the series. That's where I came up with the "Changing Tides." Plus it portrays a great metaphor as to how my life has been these past 8 months (I think a lot of people may feel the same about their own lives). The "journal Entries" touches on how I approached my canvases throughout the body of work. As you can see there are a lot of small pieces. So, in order to pay the bills and all of that jazz, one needs to do some work here and there. From October through February, I took on a construction job under my father and worked 6 days a week for Habitat for Humanity. After I got home from work I would strive to complete one small painting a day. Somewhat like journal entries of what was running through my head each day. It seemed to work well for me. So there's the tip of the iceberg of what this series deals with."

Also on display will be over 50 artists in "The Alley" and over 100 works in the "Sub 1K Lounge". New works are added throughout the building every month. In addition most of our 14 studios will be open (and several are available for rent).

"The Journal Entries of Changing Tides." will be on display from June 13th to July 4th.

Distinction is a 7000 square foot building which houses a gallery and 14 artist studios ranging in size from 150 to 800 square feet. The Gallery features contemporary and cutting edge art work with a soft focus on Urban Surrealism. Distinction exhibits work by emerging and internationally acclaimed artists and is located at: 317 East Grand Avenue, Escondido, CA 92025.

A wide variety of art books and toys are now available for purchase. Custom framing is also available. This reception is made possible in part by Scion.

Coming in July "Mind Machine" curated by studio artist Roel Jovellanos

The work of San Diego’s top-tier contemporary artists hasn’t been seen in the same place at the same time since 1985, when the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art presented “A San Diego Exhibition: Forty-Two Emerging Artists.”

Quint's low profile among the non-cognoscenti should prevent a recurrence of the grand community stink that was raised over that museum show: irate artists, impromptu salons des refusés, and coverage of the controversy in the local family paper.

The Infinity Lab

Event: The Infinity Lab presents "Nine Transient Things"
Opening Date & Time: Saturday, May 2, 2009 7:00pm - 11:00pm
Place: Voz Alta Project, 1754 National Avenue, Barrio Logan, CA 92113

THE INFINITY LAB GOES CRAYO-LOCO©

The Infinity Lab gets extravagant in their new exhibit, "Nine Transient Things." After reflecting upon the recent avant-garde art terms "un-monumental" and "Altermodernism," the infinitists take low-tech to the next level by creating nine 3' square drawings of their performance gear using only Crayola® crayons as materials. In the tradition of the late 10th-century Byzantine religious works, the subject matter could be considered The Infinity Icons or The Infinity Relics, but instead the doctors irreverently add whimsical intonations to the latest contemporary art aesthetics by calling them: "Nine Transient Things".

During the opening and closing receptions, DJ Dan Camacho will mix soundscapes on three turntables. Also on display is a top-secret installation of a new "Blue Chip [artist] Special."

Closing Reception: Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 7pm -11pm
Exhibit dates: May 2-May 16th.

"A rose is a rose is a rose" - Kim MacConnel and emerging artist Brian Dick

by Kevin Freitas

from the SDVAN website

DISCOMBOBULATED: KIM MacCONNEL and emerging artist BRIAN DICK

Opening Reception
Saturday, April 25th, 7:00 - 9:00pm

Exhibition runs April 25th - July 20th, 2009

L Street Gallery
628 L Street (Across from the Omni Hotel)
San Diego, CA 92101

Kim MacConnel

DISCOMBOBULATED featuring works by Kim MacConnel and Brian Dick is the first exhibition of the 2009 San Diego Art Prize. The SD Art Prize, now in its third year, is given annually to established artists and emerging artist who have exhibited outstanding achievement in the field of Visual Arts.

The SD Art Prize is dedicated to the idea that the visual arts are a necessary and rewarding ingredient of any world-class city and a building block of the lifestyle of its residents. Conceived to promote and encourage dialogue, reflection and social interaction about San Diego’s artistic and cultural life.

What's in a name was my other choice of a title for this seemingly much-anticipated two person show at L Street Fine Art. However, with the title of the show already chosen, DISCOMBOBULATED, it might make you wonder if its selection wasn't a bit prophetic considering the ballyhoo overheard (principally by its defenders) in favor of its curatorial debut so to speak. I clearly have a different opinion and have expressed this openly and freely. But legitimacy is a very difficult thing to claim at this moment: the burden of proof lies with both MacConnel and Dick and myself amongst others, to put on a "good" show and to have a fair assessment of its outcome regardless of its headliners. Though there might be some speculation and confusion already as to what is going to be allegedly exhibited — earlier works by MacConnel from the 90's and recently-seen photos by Dick vs. entirely new productions — we'll just have to sit tight and see for ourselves. I'm hoping for the sake of everyone involved that it rises to the occasion.

For another point of view, read Keli Dailey's take on it in the Union-Tribune.

UPDATE: 4/23/09

Established artist Richard Allen Morris (76) has chosen emerging artist Tom Driscoll (64) as the 2009 San Diego Art Prize recipient. This concludes this year's Art Prize winners with none of the emerging artists nominated to this effect - and recently seen in New Contemporaries II - having been selected.

Jason Sherry & Neil Kendricks: In Conversation, April 18 @ Seminal Projects

by Richard Gleaves

I picked this because it's the most beautiful clip in the world. And I think you'll enjoy it. How it relates to my work is something about being a low-budget director, and you just have an idea that you have to do that means nothing to the entire movie — that's totally ridiculous — but you have to do it.

  — Jason Sherry

He's sort of this archaeologist in terms of pop culture and movies.

  — Neil Kendricks

Sherry's work is described in the gallery press release as "audio-mechanical sculptures and photo/print collages," but a more elegant way to conceptualize the work is as "image and non-image collage."

Image collage is in essence technically trivial: scissors, glue, and a magazine suffice. But non-image collage — a turntable with a bicycle; a pump organ with a pile of magazines; a hair dryer with ... an image collage! — takes mechanical genius, and Sherry's got it.

A worthwhile reference point here is Tim Hawkinson, who deploys similar levels of genius toward the very different goal of realizing Rube Goldberg. Hawkinson celebrates mechanism, while Sherry works to achieve a seamless whole: the collage ideal.

Update: 4/24

Michele Guieu has posted video of the full conversation.

Oring, 43, is a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts candidate at the University of California, San Diego. She is calling artists to the university’s Marcuse Gallery on April 16 & 17, Agitprop in San Diego on May 2, and compactspace in Los Angeles on May 30, to discuss their creative solutions for our country. Institutional Wellbeing: An Olfactory Plan for Oceanside Museum of Art

Institutional Wellbeing: An Olfactory Plan for Oceanside Museum of Art is a site-specific installation created by conceptual artist Brian Goeltzenleuchter that explores the perception of fragrance as an art media for interior environments. It playfully exploits the language of corporate aesthetics as well as new age healing to create and brand a scent for the museum using the latest in scent engineering technology. The exhibition will be on view through August 9, 2009.

Curatorial Statement
Institutional Wellbeing questions intersections between art, science, commodity and entertainment. Through various personas: artist, new age healer, corporate president and motivational speaker, Brian Goeltzenleuchter scrutinizes the role museums play in a world driven by image-based advertising and consumer capitalism.

Dan Graham at MOCA

by Richard Gleaves

MOCA's current show consists of two unequal parts:

  • A large group show from the permanent collection, including works by Judd, Benglis, Chamberlain, and Rothko

  • A retrospective of the conceptual artist Dan Graham

To anyone considering a visit with hungry eye or mind, consider yourself forewarned: the former makes the latter feel like a long string of late-night TV commercials (notwithstanding the occasional Glenn Branca score).

It's not every day — or decade, for that matter — that one can spend quality time in a roomful of Rothkos. For this, go.

But as for the half a museum of Graham, it left me in a state of anesthesia to a degree I've never before experienced from a major museum show. Out of profound respect for and affinity with conceptual art — good conceptual art — I'm considering a return trip to try and determine whether, as the museum claims, anyone's home.
