San Diego Art Prize New Contemporaries III

Comments

Kevin I like your drawing.

Also, congrats to Greg Boudreau, a well deserving new contemporary.

Nice drawing Kevin. Perhaps the art prize organizer's have overlooked a talent. Maybe next time?

I think the real question Steve is not whether I have any talent, but how hoplessly flawed the whole SD Art Prize is and what to do about it. Isn't anyone thinking about the ramifications of such a narrow selection of artists (over half of them represented by galleries) and what it says about the depth of the artistic talent that resides here? No, instead we're more than happy to idly sit back, take what we can get, and pretend it means something all in the name of a little exposure and a couple of headlines. Show me the art!

Kevin, my tongue was stuck firmly in my cheek my friend.

Mea culpa! Steve

I take this shit way too seriously!

I am with Luis de Jesus gallery BECAUSE they saw my work at the art prize show in 2008. I did not have gallery representation before that. I nominated Wendell Kling because he is a very good artist who's work I know very well and who has not received as much attention as I think it deserves. I read the nomination materials I was given and he fit the criteria. It was my pleasure to nominate him. Brian :)

Brian -

Last year you tried as well to convince me that your nomination for the art prize fell under the show's criteria or was somehow justified. The fact of the matter is there are a ponderance of artists represented by galleries, that under normal circumstances, do not need the added recognition or support. This is what galleries do, they support their artists and give them shows. Why not make room for those artists that do not have galleries - truly young talents - that deserve the chance and exposure.

You have been intimately involved with the art prize, in one capacity or another, for three years now. How is any of that "good policy" or at the very least, not seen as taking up way too much floor space?

Other than a show at an out of the way, poorly lit space and a headline, what is the PRIZE?

Who nominated the nomination committee?
Where is the voice of the independent critic or curator, in the selection process?

Kevin I think your drawing is funny, not because of the drawing, but because it illustrates something you have been critical about the scene for some time. That is the insular and incestuous nature of the canonization of ARTist's in San Diego.

The humor in the drawing is something like this.
"Ok people do I really need to draw this one out for you?"

By self proclamation I nominate Art as Authority for the 2011 San Diego Art prize.
