A film by Nochnoy Dozor, directed by Timur Bekmambetov

Excellent movie set in present-day Moscow about the struggle between light and darkness. Review by Gerry Carpenter (webmaster@scifilm.org) from Salt Lake City, UT

A thousand years ago two forces met on the battle field, the warriors of light and the army of darkness. As the battle raged, the two forces proved to be exactly balanced, and so a decision was made maintain that balance and the two sides came to an agreement that neither side would breach. And to enforce the agreement two watches were formed: the Day Watch and the Night Watch. The Night Watch is composed of the forces of good who work to keep the forces of evil from breaching the agreement and vice versa. The watches continue today... Warriors of virtue (some are shape changers, others have less definable talents) who fight against rogue vampires, witches, etc. Both sides are usually invisible to normal people unless they choose to be seen, except for a few "others" who can see and interact with the immortals. And therein lies the instability, because the "others" also have the potential to become immortals and they can go toward either side. Plus, there is a prophecy of a "Great One" who will shift the balance, plunging the world into an era of light or darkness.

Great action, good use of CGI and practical effects. Excellent soundtrack. It reminded me quite a bit of Jeunet's directional style (CITY OF LOST CHILDREN), but more than anything the movie reminded me of the recent Bollywood sci-fi actioner RUDRAKSCH.

This one is definitely recommended if you are tired of the same old Hollywood formula crap. Especially if you are a fan of Horror/Action with a dash of Sci-Fi.

Ce titre énigmatique qui semble évoquer quelque ectoplasme tout droit sorti d’une imagination chimérique, ne doit pas masquer le propos dévoilé par le sous-titre : « contribution à une théorie de l’art contemporain ». Mais quel intérêt, me diriez-vous, de lire cette nième contribution qui risque tout au plus d’embrouiller nos pauvres idées sur l’art actuel ? Tout n’a-il pas déjà été dit ? Je voudrais vous faire partager l’intérêt que j’ai eu à lire l’essai récent d’Anne Cauquelin, paru au printemps dernier. Il n’est jamais évident d’évoquer le vide, le rien, l’inexprimable. Pourtant, force est de constater que dans l’art contemporain ces notions traversent, et même fondent certaines fois nombre de pratiques actuelles, laissant le public dans un désarroi absolu. L’implicite des critiques qui tente d’évoquer ces tendances entretient souvent un flou confortable autour de ces notions.

En bâtissant sa réflexion sur l’ancienne théorie stoïcienne des « incorporels » Anne Cauquelin opère d’étonnants rapprochements avec les manifestations artistiques contemporaines. En convoquant successivement les quatre « incorporels » que sont le vide, le lieu le temps et l’exprimable, en levant les paradoxes et les complexités de leurs relations, l’auteur nous offre un cadre d’analyse et de pensée radical qui sort des approches traditionnelles du vide par la voie zen. La démonstration est forte, claire et argumentée. Anne Cauquelin prolonge son développement vers les pratiques virtuelles en interrogeant la spécificité du temps et du lieu dans les cyberespaces, leurs relations avec l’exprimable et l’impact que ces formes ont sur notre appréhension.

L’auteur
Anne Cauquelin est professeur émérite de philosophie esthétique. Elle est l’auteur de nombreux essais, dont Petit traité d’art contemporain (Seuil, 1996); L’invention du paysage (Puf, 2000).
