Substitution: début Mars - first of March
I began a project several years ago entitled, Substitution, that never saw the light of day until now. I asked several artists to complete a sentence “Instead of Making Art I... .” (Au lieu de faire de l'art) which was taken from a 1970’s conceptual project by the artist Frederick Barthelme. Via the fax machine and letters posted to various artists and friends, Barthelme cast his message in a bottle into an ocean of responses. I’ve always had a great interest in conceptual art, a soft spot for Dada & Surrealism, word/text “art” in general, and so liked the simplicity of Barthelme’s project. I realized then that I wanted to do a cover, so to speak of his project by bringing it into the 21st century using the technology of today – email. I encouraged the artists participating, to incorporate digital images, animations, graphics etc. within their responses or by a simple text if so desired. You'll discover I believe, a variety of responses often times surprising, often times very blunt, often times quite funny that are nonetheless worthy of further discussion and investigation of what artists do with their "FREE" time when not making art.
I also welcome you to openly submit your response to "Instead of making art I ... ." by making a comment below. Please include your name, the date and choose a number of the response - i.e. Substitution # ___ between 1 and 100. Thank you.

Instead of making art I pass time on the net admiring the vast human absurdity (yet sometimes joyful and the absurdity poofs in a dazzle of wonder). I visit recondite blogs and wonder why I'm posting to them even as I do so, and somehow the two fuse, resulting in this. And this.
Does this clarify things?
